UTSA charitable campaign meetings continue

(Oct. 27, 2003)--The second week of State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) meetings are underway and Monday morning Sharon Baughman of Christian Senior Services and Paul Heitzman with the San Antonio Police Department discussed some of the agencies that benefit from SECC contributions.

According to Baughman, Christian Senior Services has more than 700 volunteers that help senior citizens maintain their independence and dignity in their later years. One of the programs, Meals on Wheels, helped provide more than 473,000 mid-day meals to Bexar County senior citizens last year with the help of 34 local churches and ten businesses.

The organization also provides care for Alzheimer's and dimentia patients and conducts regular visits to low-income senior citizens in need of care.

UTSA's SECC funds 70 agencies and 120 programs including the Boys and Girls Clubs, boys and girl scouts, Red Cross, Urban Ministries After School Care and local YMCA organizations. The campaign ends Nov. 7 with the goal of $120,000 and a 50-percent participation rate of UTSA employees.
