Senator Gregory Luna was known in Texas as the godfather of Latino students. His love of education was instrumental in championing many of the legislative reforms that improved Latino students' chances for educational achievement. A graduate of Sidney Lanier High School in San Antonio, Luna was determined to break from the poverty in which he grew up.
"It was very important to my father that everyone would have equal opportunity to go to college," said Leticia Ann Luna. "He felt that his way out of poverty would be through higher education and that anyone, despite their economic background, should also have that opportunity."
In its third year, the auction raises scholarship money for students in financial need who want to attend UTSA. Preference for the scholarships is given to Lanier graduates and students graduating from schools in District 26.
Among the artists contributing pieces are famed photographer Kathy Vargas, architect Rolando Briseno, Charles Ingram and Municipal Court Judge Daniel Guerrero.
"The reason for my involvement is simple," said Ingram, who contributed the piece "Sunset Rhapsody." "I want to help open the door to students who otherwise would not have an opportunity to attend UTSA."
Ingram, a graduate of Oliver Wendell Holmes High School and former UTSA student, knows first-hand the importance of such help. He recalls that without scholarships, he may never have had the opportunity to pursue higher education.
Established by family, friends, former legislative colleagues and constituents of the longtime Texas legislator, the scholarship effort began shortly after Luna's death in November 1999, and the endowment was announced Nov. 17, 2000, Luna's birthday.
