'People's Nine' Proposition 3 to benefit UTSA athletics

(Nov. 6, 2003)--On Tuesday, Nov. 4, voters passed "The People's Nine," a $215 million city-county bond effort that will be used to fund a wide range of public recreation, public health and safety, and cultural projects.

A small chunk of that total -- $1.5 million -- stands to make a big impact at UTSA athletics.

County residents approved a package of parks and recreation improvements (Proposition 3) that will allow UTSA, in partnership with the San Antonio Sports Foundation, to begin planning for a 5,000-seat track and soccer field facility on the 1604 Campus.

"The facility will allow UTSA to host competitions on a state, national and international level," said Lynn Hickey, UTSA director of intercollegiate athletics. "It also would offer UTSA students additional facilities and opportunities for intramural and club sports."

Because the UTSA athletics program receives no tax dollars from state sources, UTSA will seek other donors and sources for remaining costs.
