UTSA student newspaper hosts Nov. 12 media forum

(Nov. 10, 2003)--The Paisano, UTSA's independent student newspaper, hosts a media forum at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 12 in the University Center Retama Auditorium (2.02.02) on the UTSA 1604 Campus.

Pictured are forum guest speakers San Antonio Express-News editor Robert Rivard (top photo) and WOAI-TV anchorman Randy Beamer (lower photo).

The forum will cover a variety of topics including the Internet's effect on media trends, the future of print media and society's attitudes toward the media.

"Participants are encouraged to ask questions and engage discussion," said Gabriel Mejia, Paisano editor.

Speakers were asked to cover any topics they feel are important, but were offered questions including:

  • How do you choose stories?
  • How do things that happen at UTSA affect San Antonio?
  • What are your thoughts on Iraq?
  • Has media over-saturation led to public apathy and indifference to current events?
  • How is the lead story chosen? What types of local events are considered most important?
  • What are the responsibilities to the public?
  • How do you balance the need to present an objective story with the need to generate interesting news segments or stories?
  • How has the Internet affected television journalism?
  • How has the public's reliance on television as a primary source of news changed perception and understanding of current events?
  • What is the local TV news role in covering news during a time of war or national crisis?
