Institute of Texan Cultures hosts 'Winter Wonderland'

(Nov. 20, 2003)--The Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) helps celebrate the holiday season with the drive-through light display "Winter Wonderland" from Nov. 28 to Dec. 28.

The exhibit includes more than 200 holiday-themed light displays and is open each evening at the ITC grounds from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is $10 per car, $7 with coupon.

During regular hours of operation on the ITC exhibit floor, visitors can delight in a wonderland of snow and scenery from "The Nutcracker," based on the illustrations by Maurice Sendak and the flavor of many cultures. Exhibit floor displays are included with regular admission.

In conjunction with "Winter Wonderland," ITC will present these special performances on weekend afternoons:

  • "A Christmas Carol" will be performed in dramatic reading format by the Extended Run Players at 3 p.m., Dec. 7, 14 and 21.
  • The Antioch Baptist Church Choir will sing popular holiday carols at 2:30 p.m., Dec. 6.
  • Madrigal singers from Lee High School will give a special holiday performance at 2:30 p.m., Dec. 13.
  • Jump-Start Performance Co. will present the play "Las Nuevas Tamaleras" at 2:30 p.m., Dec. 20. The play centers on young Latinas learning the art of making tamales from the ghosts of their foremothers. Admission for the play is $12.95. For tickets, call 210-458-2259.

Institute of Texan Cultures admission fees are $6.50, adults; $3, children (3-12 years); $4, seniors (65 years or older); $4, military personnel with ID; and free, members, UTSA students and employees and children 2 years and under.

Through Nov. 28, Institute of Texan Cultures hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday. As of Nov. 29, the exhibit floor is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday; noon-5 p.m., Sunday.
