UTSA juried student art show opens at Blue Star

(Dec. 8, 2003)--It was an impressive first showing, in art and in people, as the UTSA Student Art Guild opened "Surfaces," a juried exhibition of recent works by graduate and undergraduate student artists, Dec. 5 in the George Yepes Studio at the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center.

Pictured are visitors to the studio for Friday's opening and Michael Transfiguracion's painting "In the Red Scene."

Tom Willome, an art professor at San Antonio College, selected 71 pieces out of nearly 200 submitted by UTSA art students for the show. The largest category, by far, was in paintings with 34 pieces including the work selected as Best in Show, "In the Red Scene" by Michael Transfiguracion.

Transfiguracion was also recognized for his painting, "Walking Thru Pat." Laura Treio received top honors in the sculpture category with "HEB Sundress," and Brandi Davis received an award for her photograph, "High Hamster on St. Charles."

The top two pieces in each of the six categories (ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture) were recognized along with the single Best-in-Show honor.

Gallery hours at the George Yepes Studio are 4-7 p.m., Mon.-Fri., and 2-5 p.m. Sat. "Surfaces" will be on display through Dec. 19.
