UTSA ranks fifth among state agencies in HUB expenditures

(Dec. 17, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio ranks No. 5 among state agencies in the total percentage of purchases for fiscal year 2003 from historically underutilized businesses (HUBs).

"UTSA continues to increase its support of historically underutilized businesses, and I thank everyone at the university for taking part in the HUB program," said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. "As one of the fastest growing universities in the state, it is important for UTSA to take a leadership role in supporting HUBs. Because of this program, many of the university's purchasing dollars stay in the local community."

The ranking is according to the Texas Building and Procurement Commission, which lists the top 25 agencies reporting expenditures in excess of $5 million. UTSA's expenditures were $31,695,434, with $8,719,016 (or 26.64 percent) spent with HUBs, a 4.7 percent increase from fiscal year 2002.

The UTSA HUB program, in coordination with the UT System HUB initiative, is designed to encourage and assist participation by minority- and women-owned businesses in university contracting and purchasing.

Four other University of Texas components made the top 25 list: Dallas (6th), Brownsville (7th), El Paso (19th) and Southwestern Medical Center (25th). Topping the list was the Texas Tomorrow Fund, which expended $5,770,883 with HUBs, or 64.32 percent of its total expenditures of $8,971.595.
