Romo welcomed current District 8 City Councilman Art Hall and former Councilwoman Bonnie Conner, who discussed the history of the scholarship program. UTSA student Christina LeBlanc thanked the council members for the program and the educational opportunities made possible for her and many others.
Hall was elected to the District 8 council seat in May 2003. Conner is now affiliated with the San Antonio Parks Foundation.
The City Council District 8 scholarship program was established by Conner in 2000 with city discretionary funding. One of the most successful uses of the funds, approximately $130,000 in scholarships was distributed under Conners tenure to UTSA students. This year, Hall coordinated the distribution of $60,000 for UTSA scholarships.
Of the 21 students who received scholarships, 16 are currently working on completion of their degree programs. Students receive $1,000 per semester which is renewable up to four years by maintaining good academic standing.
