"Magda's Tortillas/Las tortillas de Magda"

Institute of Texan Cultures hosts new puppet show

(Feb. 5, 2004)--The Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) will host debut performances beginning Feb. 14 of the new bilingual puppet show, "Magda's Tortillas/Las tortillas de Magda."

Author and San Antonio native Becky Chavarria-Chairez adapted her acclaimed children's book into the puppet play that will be narrated by Henry Cisneros with music composed by George Cisneros. The author and her daughter, Carina Chavarria-Chairez, will voice the characters in the play which celebrates cultural heritage and cherished family traditions.

"The tradition of making tortillas presents a universal theme that resonates with many peoples and cultures in Texas," said Chavarria-Chairez. "So many Hispanics in the Southwest recall the days when they were embarrassed to take their homemade tortillas to school. Tortillas have come a long way. The introduction of this first bilingual production offers something for all Hispanics -- young and old -- to be proud of."

"Magda's Tortillas/Las tortillas de Magda" is performed with permission from the publisher (Arte Publico Press/Pinata Books, University of Houston, 2000). The puppets are crafted by Pat Curry of Dallas, reflecting the book illustrations by Anne Vega.

For show times, call 210-458-2282.

Group rates are available. Admission is $6.50 for adults, $3 for children (3-12 years), $4 for seniors (65 years and older), $4 for military personnel with ID, and free for members, UTSA students and employees, and children (2 years and younger).
