Local artists help secure Luna scholarship endowment
(Feb. 24, 2004)--Thanks to more than 50 local artists and the UTSA Office of the President, the UTSA-Sen. Gregory Luna Memorial Endowed Scholarship has been fully endowed.
San Antonio artists donated their work for the recent Gregory Luna Endowment Auction at the UTSA Downtown Campus. The event garnered nearly $10,000 in sales benefitting the scholarship fund. UTSA President Ricardo Romo designated $10,000 in discretionary funds to help reach the initiatives goal of $100,000.

"The fact that we were able to raise $10,000 in a matter of hours is testament to the commitment of this community," said Almeida. "We are also grateful to contributing artists who make it possible to continue the education legacy of Sen. Luna."
In its third year, the auction raises scholarship money for students in financial need with preference given to Lanier High School graduates and students graduating from District 26 schools.
"It was very important to my father that everyone would have equal opportunity to go to college," said Leticia Ann Luna. "He felt that his way out of poverty would be through higher education and that anyone, despite their economic background, should also have that opportunity."
Established by family, friends, former legislative colleagues and constituents of the longtime Texas legislator, the scholarship effort began shortly after Luna's death in November 1999, and the endowment was announced Nov. 17, 2000, on Luna's birthday.
