Diploma Dash is ready to run Feb. 28

(Feb. 20, 2004)--The UTSA Alumni Association presents the 20th annual Diploma Dash City Championship 5K Run and Fitness Walk at 9 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 28. Sponsored by financial services company ING, the event begins at the Convocation Center on the UTSA 1604 Campus.

The last day for early registration is Wednesday, Feb. 25. Early registration is $15, $10 for students. On race day, registration is $20.

Check-in is 8 a.m. Feb. 28 with the race starting at 9 a.m. Presentation of awards is at 10:15 a.m.

Troy Dryer, regional manager of ING, partnered with UTSA on this major event because, as he puts it, "[this event] focuses on our market and, as the San Antonio city championship race, it attracts runners from all over this region."

ING, the fifth largest financial services company in the world, has a long association with the UT System as a provider of optional retirement programs to the various component institutions.

Since the run began in 1984, it has evolved into one of the premier running events in San Antonio. In 1998, the run became San Antonio's city championship 5K race and is an official event of the San Antonio/Bexar County Fit City initiative.

Open to runners and walkers, the event benefits the UTSA alumni scholarship program (80 percent of proceeds) and UTSA track/cross country athlete scholarships (20 percent of proceeds). The certified 5K course is a flat, fast route through the UTSA campus following a 1.5-mile scenic route.

Registration forms are available at Roger Soler's Sports or at the Alumni Association Web site.
