UTSA and Institute of Mexico to host readings
(March 22, 2004)--UTSA and the Institute of Mexico will host writer Jimmy Santiago Baca reading from his short stories and poetry at two presentations in San Antonio. The readings are free and open to all.
Baca will read from his new collection of short stories, "The Importance of a Piece of Paper" and "Winter Poems Along the Rio Grande" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 23 at the Institute of Mexico, 600 HemisFair Park, and at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, March 25 at the UTSA Downtown Campus Buena Vista Street Building Room 3.328.

A native of Santa Fe, N.M., Baca's honors include the Wallace Stevens Chair at Yale, National Endowment Poetry Award, Vogelstein Foundation Award, National Hispanic Heritage Award, Berkeley Regents Award, Pushcart Prize, Southwest Book Award and American Book Award.
He earned a B.A. in English (1984) and a Ph.D. in literature (2003), both from the University of New Mexico.
His books include "A Place to Stand," "Healing Earthquakes," "C-Train & Thirteen Mexicans," "Black Mesa Poems," "Martin & Meditations on the South Valley" and "Immigrants in Our Own Land."
Bacas movie scripts and productions include "Bound by Honor (Blood In, Blood Out)," Hollywood Pictures/Disney, and "The Lone Wolf: The Story of Pancho Gonzalez," HBO Productions.
He has been a guest on National Public Radio, "Good Morning America," PBS' "Language of Life with Bill Moyers" and "CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood."
