Photographer to discuss images in Latina literature

(March 30, 2004)--The UTSA College of Liberal and Fine Arts Lecture Series presents literary critic and conceptual photographer Maria DeGuzman speaking on "The Photographic Thought of Latina/o Literature" at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, April 1 in Humanities and Social Sciences Building Room 2.01.10 at the UTSA 1604 Campus.

DeGuzman, an assistant professor of Latina/Latino studies in the Department of English, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, will discuss Latina/Latino literature. The lecture will include examples from Chicana/Chicano, Cuban American, Dominican American and Puerto Rican literature that use photography and text that suggests photographic images.

The presentation will feature an analysis of the relation between text and image, utilizing samples from DeGuzman's portfolio and other Latina/Latino photographers.

DeGuzman earned a B.A. in American literature and Hispanic studies from Brown University and a M.A. and Ph.D. in English and American literature from Harvard University.

Her current projects include two book manuscripts, "'American' In Dependence: Spain in Anglo-American Culture" (under contract with the University of Minnesota Press) and "Buenas Noches, 'American' Literature: Latina/o Aesthetics of Night."

DeGuzman has published essays on Graciela Limon, John Rechy, Ana Castillo, Achy Obejas, Miguel Algarin, Floyd Salas and the Spanish-Cuban-American War of 1898.

DeGuzman works alone and in collaboration as Camera Query.
