LeRoy Hurd, Kurt Attaway take home SLC honors

(March 8, 2004)--On the verge of leading the league in scoring for the second straight year, UTSA forward LeRoy Hurd, has been tabbed Southland Conference Player of the Year, becoming just the third Roadrunner in school history to earn the honor.

Meanwhile, guard Kurt Attaway picked up SLC Freshman of the Year honors, bringing the title home to the Convocation Center for the first time since Devin Brown earned the honor in 1999.  Coincidentally, Brown's breakout season was also the last trip the Roadrunners made to the NCAA Tournament, a feat they are trying to repeat this season.

A senior from Moss Point, Miss., Hurd is averaging 19.4 points per game heading into the postseason, which begins tonight. Voted last year's newcomer of the year after transferring from the University of Miami, Hurd also ranks second in the league in rebounding at 8.1 per game.  Hurd led the league in 2003 with a 17.6 scoring average and finished fourth with 8.0 rebounds a contest.

Attaway finished his regular-season rookie campaign averaging 7.3 points and ranking 10th in the SLC with 3.3 assists per game.  Joining Hurd and Attaway, UTSA juniors Justin Harbert and Raphael Posey both picked up honorable mention all-conference honors.  Harbert, a graduate of San Antonio's Taft High School, averaged 10.2 points per game, while Posey is second on the team with an 11.1 per game mark.

Monday night the Roadrunners take the first step toward March Madness when they host Texas State in first-round playoff action at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center. It will be the third meeting this season between UTSA and Texas State with each team winning on the other's home court. Texas State defeated UTSA, 74-73 on Jan. 21 in San Antonio, while UTSA returned the favor by a 69-66 count on Feb. 25 in San Marcos.

Tickets for the Monday, March 8 game with Texas State are on sale in the UTSA Ticket Office at 210-458-4646. Reserved tickets are $10 and general admission tickets are $7. Students from SLC institutions are admitted free with a valid school ID.
