Staff awards nomination deadline is Friday
(April 19, 2004)--It's time once again for UTSA staff members to submit nominations
for the UTSA Staff Excellence Awards. The nomination deadline is 5 p.m. April
23.
"I encourage supervisors and managers to take the time to nominate those
staff members who you believe are deserving of this recognition and honor,"
said UTSA President Ricardo Romo.

The goal of the Staff Excellence Awards is to honor outstanding UTSA staff
across the tri-campuses who demonstrate excellent work performance.
Five Staff Excellence Awards will be presented for emerging leadership, dynamic
leadership, teamwork, extraordinary initiative and overall excellence. Read

The awards are:
A monetary award of $1,000 will accompany each Staff Excellence Award.
This year's ceremony is set for 2:30 p.m., Friday, May 28 in the University
Center Retama Auditorium (2.02.02). The ceremony will include employee service
awards and recognition of last year's retirees.

UTSA Staff Excellence Awards Descriptions

The Rising Star Award
The Rising Star Award will be awarded to a newcomer who has less than three
years of service with the University and who has made significant contributions
throughout the year to his or her area, or to the university community.
This individual has innovative ideas and has made creative contributions.
They have a demonstrated record of improvement, have progressed through
cooperation, taken initiative, are self-directed and have a take-charge
attitude. This talented employee has volunteered to assist when and where
needed. Individuals recognized in this category are considered emerging
leaders within the university community.

The Leadership Award
The Leadership Award will be given to a staff member who has demonstrated
strong leadership skills throughout the year, has served as a role model
for his or her colleagues and has promoted the university's goals through
actions and job performance. Other qualities include: leading by example
and having a positive influence with their peers and the department. This
nominee has made presentations, served on committees and volunteered for
campus activities. This award seeks to promote and encourage commitment
to UTSA and its goals at all levels.

The Team Spirit Award
The Team Spirit Award will be awarded to an individual or group*
who has fostered cooperation with fellow employees internal and/or external
to their department. This individual's actions have had an impact or benefit
to UTSA and the community. This nominee has managed a team effort and contributed
to the morale of the work group. Other qualities to look for include accepting
responsibility and demonstrating a positive, can-do attitude. The award
recognizes the value of collaboration in meeting the needs of the UTSA community.
*Recipient(s) of this award may be either an individual or a group
of individuals.

The Extra-Mile Award
The Extra Mile Award will be bestowed upon an individual who has taken the
initiative to contribute to the success of UTSA through his or her outstanding
contributions at work. They see and understand the big picture; they are
flexible, exhibit motivation and accept responsibility. This individual
has improved the efficiency of the department through creativity and innovation.
They have tackled a problem and looked for a solution. This award recognizes
an individual who has set an example by leading the way.

The Order of the Roadrunner Award
The Order of the Roadrunner Award will be given to an individual who demonstrates
exemplary service and commitment to UTSA and the achievement of its goals
through his or her actions throughout the year. This is the highest honor
that a UTSA staff member can receive for his or her dedication to the UTSA
community. This individual has improved their work environment by increasing
productivity and/or efficiency. They have motivated co-workers to do their
best and instilled pride in UTSA. They are service oriented; they display
extraordinary creativity and innovation. This leader is reliable, dedicated
and committed to the UTSA goals, and they set and meet their own goals.
