UTSA cheerleaders make mark at NCA contest

(May 11, 2004)--In only their second year of competing at the national level, the UTSA cheerleaders showed they are a program on the rise, finishing in fifth place at the National Cheerleaders Association Chick-fil-A National Competition in Daytona Beach, Fla., that concluded the first weekend in April.

The rise to fifth place in the 19-team event, comes one season after the UTSA squad placed 12th.

"We showed great improvement at the nationals this season which tells you a lot about this year's squad," said coach Melissa Rodriguez. "We were sixth going into finals and we came out fifth. This is only the second year to compete and they were great. We would like to thank everyone for their support. We have already had tryouts and are getting ready for next year."

UTSA featured a mix of veterans and newcomers in finishing fifth this season. Rodriguez' squad consisted of Vanessa Benavidez, Reyes Blanco, Tamika Brown, Alyse Carrillo, Jessica Chavez, Carlos Cortes, Gloria De La Garza, Tasha Eggleston, Kristy Garza, Kalani Hargrove, Jasmine Hasty, Lacy Lehrer, Andrea Mancillas, Monique Martinez, Max Parra, Steven Parra, Jackie Smith, Cari Ramsour, Angie Read, Jeannette Vasquez, Sandy Villarreal, Brenda Whitaker and manager Katrina Ware.
