Gilkes, a native of St. Michael, Barbados, and a two-time Southland Conference Indoor 800m champion, overtook favorite and former Austin Peay All-American Sheena Gooding over the final 100 meters for the win, crossing the finish line in 2:06.43 ahead of Gooding's 2:07.45.
Gilkes will represent Barbados at the North American-Central American-Caribbean (NACAC) Athletic Association Under-23 Championships on July 30-Aug. 1, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. She could participate in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, if she meets the Olympic "A" standard of 2:00.00 or if Barbados selects her as its representative provided no one else meets any "A" standards.
