UTSA ranks among Top 10 for Hispanic students

(June 15, 2004)--The number of Hispanic students graduating with undergraduate degrees from UTSA ranks among the top universities in the nation, according to the May 2004 edition of The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine.

Overall, UTSA ranked No. 4 with 1,261 undergraduate degrees awarded to Hispanics in the magazine's survey of the Top 100 predominantly Hispanic-serving colleges and universities in the United States and Puerto Rico.

UTSA jumped two positions this year, ranking 12th with 212 master's degrees awarded to Hispanics for the period surveyed, the 2001-2002 academic year.

"These findings demonstrate UTSA's commitment to better serving our community and reaching out to students traditionally underrepresented in higher education," said Ricardo Romo, UTSA president. "UTSA's jump in the ranks of institutions that award master's degrees to Hispanic students is particularly satisfying as we continue to strive towards becoming one of the next premier research universities in Texas."

For the seventh time in eight years, UTSA also ranked first in the biological sciences academic concentration with 98 undergraduate degrees awarded to Hispanics.

In the number of bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics in individual academic programs, UTSA rankings among the Top 10 disciplines were:

  • 1st -- biological sciences (98 degrees awarded)
  • 2nd -- business and marketing (350)
  • 3rd -- multi/interdisciplinary studies (200)
  • 3rd -- mathematics (24)
  • 4th -- psychology (112)
  • 5th -- protective services (84)
  • 6th -- English literature (46)
  • 9th -- architecture (19)

The 2004 survey also ranked three UTSA individual academic programs higher than the previous year. The business and marketing program improved from 3rd to 2nd; the mathematics program leaped from 9th to 3rd and the English literature program jumped from 10th to 6th.

"The Top 10 ranking for UTSA's School of Architecture program is significant as we look to expand course offerings at the rapidly growing UTSA Downtown Campus," said Romo. "To have eight undergraduate degree programs in the Top 10 nationally out of the 21 discipline concentrations surveyed is a tribute to the commitment and dedication of our excellent faculty."

Overall, the University of Texas System dominated the first tier of the Top 100 institutions with UT Pan American, UT San Antonio, UT El Paso and UT Austin placing among the Top 10.
