Science institute invites proposal submissions

(June 1, 2004)--The San Antonio Life Science Institute (SALSI), a joint creation of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), is requesting proposal submissions to conduct research in the life sciences.

The deadline for this second round of submissions is June 14. The first group of proposals was accepted in February.

According to the co-directors of the institute, Joe L. Martinez Jr., UTSA, and James Roberts, UTHSCSA, the major purpose of SALSI's investment in research is to increase the research-funding base at both institutions.

The increased collaboration will lead to submission of research proposals to federal agencies and a an increase in extramural, peer-reviewed research funding at the two universities.

SALSI is supported by institutional and state funds over a two-year period. Targeted research areas include bioengineering, bioterrorism, health disparities and neuroscience.

SALSI will consider research proposals in areas described in the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research and in any area of the life sciences that is represented at both institutions and may successfully compete for federal monies.

SALSI expects to recommend funding for about 20 proposals per year in the $50,000 to $200,000 range with budgets appropriate to the scope of the projects. Proposals outside this range will be considered, but must be carefully justified. Funds have been set aside for innovative non-research programs including joint educational efforts.
