
UTSA alumnus named Carolina League all-star
(June 21, 2004)--Former UTSA third baseman Mark Schramek earned his second all-star team spot in as many years as one of five Potomac Cannons named to the 2004 Carolina League all-star team.
The June 29 all-star game will pit the Carolina League against the California League in San Bernardino, Calif.

A supplemental first round (40th overall) pick by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2002 Major League Baseball draft, Schramek is batting .271 with eight home runs and 27 RBI for the organization's Single-A club, ranking among the league leaders in both slugging and on-base percentage.
The highest draft pick in UTSA history, Schramek set a school record for single-season batting average (.416) as a senior and was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year, the Southland Conference Hitter of the Year, the UTSA team MVP, UTSA team Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year and an all-American.
He signed with the Reds in December 2002 after considering an offer from the Orix Blue Wave in Japan.
In 2003, his first season of professional baseball, Schramek earned a spot on the Midwest League all-star team, splitting the season among three of the Reds' minor league teams -- the Dayton Dragons (Single-A), the Chattanooga Lookouts (Double-A) and the Potomac Cannons (Single-A).
In 2003, Baseball America rated the San Antonio native as the Cincinnati Reds' 10th best prospect.
