State board approves math master's degree
(July 13, 2004)--The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved a master of science degree in applied mathematics-industrial mathematics at The University of Texas at San Antonio.
The new program, scheduled to begin in the fall, will produce graduates with advanced, marketable skills in areas relevant to solving problems found in industry and mission-driven governmental research.

"We will emphasize real-world applications of mathematics and produce graduates capable of understanding the pragmatic realities inherent in running a business and in working as members of a team," said Lucio Tavernini, chair of the UTSA Department of Applied Mathematics. "This concept is new for mathematical sciences, where we traditionally reward individual effort based on originality and ingenuity shown in solving a mathematical problem.
Students must complete 36 semester credit hours including 15 hours of graduate mathematic coursework and 12 hours of graduate courses in a discipline of professional specialization.
