UTSA Spotlight: UTSA star shines in Iraq

(Oct. 29, 2004)--Billy Steele wears many hats, though most of his co-workers know him as superintendent of facilities services at UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures.

But he now serves in another role as platoon sergeant in the Corps of Engineers in the U.S. Army Reserves currently stationed in Iraq. Although his crew at ITC misses his day-to-day presence, they couldn't be prouder.

"Billy is highly motivated and always engaged," said Paul Suttles, interim director of construction and maintenance. "He would come in early and stay late. He could make your day -- never a dull moment."

Steele, a UTSA employee since 1998, directed crews on projects including the set-up and tear-down of the Texas Folklife Festival, the extension of the institute's lower gallery and the streamlining of the electrical wiring throughout the grounds.

The team he leads is unanimous with Steele's positive attitude and team player support. He was called to active duty in November 2003, but his fellow employees say his sense of humor is still missed in the halls of the institute and the quality of his work on many projects continues to be appreciated.

"When we hired him, we made the right decision," said Joe Rubio, assistant director of custodial services and Steele's supervisor. "He is attentive to the needs of the institute and of his people, and has all the things a supervisor would be proud of. We look forward to his return at the conclusion of his tour."

Care packages are regularly assembled at the ITC and 1604 campuses for Steele. If you would like to send an item, call (210) 458-2250.
