Westin La Cantera Resort endows UTSA tourism management scholarship

(Oct. 29, 2004)--Prior to opening its doors in 1999, Tony Cherone, Westin La Cantera Resort general manager, hosted with the UTSA Tourism Management Program a job fair at the UTSA 1604 Campus.

The fair resulted in more than 120 students being employed at the award-winning resort, and since then hundreds of other students have worked there.

In addition to employing UTSA students, Cherone funded scholarships each year and the resort's senior management team has also served as guest lecturers. This year, Cherone decided to make that scholarship permanent by funding a $10,000 endowed scholarship.

"This is just the beginning. We plan to add more to the endowment in the years ahead," Cherone said.

The Westin La Cantera Resort is ranked in the top 20 of the Conde Nast Traveler's prestigious 2003 Top 100 Golf Resorts and designated by Travel and Leisure magazine as one its 500 Greatest Hotels in the World.
