UTSA, ACCD receive KellyUSA scholarship gifts

(Oct. 7, 2004)--(Oct. 7, 2004)--The Greater Kelly Development Foundation announced today the 2004-2005 KellyUSA Scholarship Program at a press conference at KellyUSA.

The foundation will donate $40,000 to UTSA and $20,000 to the Alamo Community College District (ACCD) for scholarships. Four UTSA students will receive $2,500 per year, renewable up to four years. Ten ACCD students will receive $1,000, renewable in the second year of their programs.

Ricardo Romo, UTSA president, and Dan Derrico, ACCD vice chancellor for administration, accepted the scholarship gifts from Bruce Miller, Greater Kelly Development Authority chief executive officer.

"The Greater Kelly Development Foundation intends to ease the financial burden of four years of college on our selected scholarship recipients," said Miller. "We are dedicated to increasing student participation and success in higher education, and nurturing each award recipient through their entire four-year college experience."

"We are grateful for this generous gift which will make a difference in the lives of our students," said Romo. "As state appropriations for higher education decrease, scholarships such as this are even more crucial to UTSA's goal to become the state's next premier research university."

The needs-based scholarships will go to high school seniors from the eight zip codes surrounding KellyUSA who plan to pursue bachelor's degrees in mathematics, science, engineering or business. Special consideration is also given to students or parents who have worked for companies at KellyUSA.
