UTSA hosts Webinar on free speech and civility
(Oct. 11, 2004)--The UTSA Office of Student Leadership and Cultural Programs presents a live Web seminar, "Free Speech and Civility on Campus," from 12:30 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13 in the University Center Laurel Room (2.01.28), 1604 Campus, and in the Durango Building Southwest Room (1.124), Downtown Campus.

The event is free and open to all. Following the online program, there will be discussions at each screening venue. Participants are invited to bring their own lunches; beverages and dessert will be provided.
Online panelists are Gary Pavela, director of judicial programs and student ethical development at the University of Maryland, and David French, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) and lead attorney in a federal case against the speech code at Shippensburg University.
Pavela and French will discuss issues confronting higher education institutions including restricting speech at athletics events, free speech zones, discerning free speech from disorderly conduct, creating civility on campus and the Shippensburg University speech code.
