UTSA debaters show skills in Missouri, Oklahoma

(Nov. 9, 2004)--At an intercollegiate debate tournament in mid-October at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, UTSA debaters defeated teams from Baylor, Wichita State, Southwest Missouri State and Oklahoma.

UTSA junior Philip DiPiazza and freshman Phillip Ripper placed third in the junior varsity division. DiPiazza won the second speaker award and his partner, Ripper, placed third among thirty debaters.

In their first outing, freshmen Shana Nettles, Houston, and Chris Reyna, San Antonio, narrowly missed advancing to championship rounds. In the novice division, two freshmen from San Antonio, Kendall Cottrell and Aaron Cruz placed fifth. Cottrell won the third speaker award.

Four UTSA debaters competed the weekend of Nov. 5 in a tournament hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond. UTSA's DiPiazza won the top speaking award among forty-two debaters in the junior division and Ripper won third place. The UTSA team of Nettles and Reyna competed in the junior varsity division. UTSA defeated teams from University of Oklahoma, Emporia State University and University of Missouri.

The next Roadrunner cross-examination debate outing is in January, when they will compete in back-to-back tournaments in Denton and Dallas. The final fall trip for the UTSA parliamentary debate team is Nov. 19-21 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
