UTSA American humanics students seek donations

(Nov. 22, 2004)--The UTSA American humanics program plans to send 10 students to the American Humanics Management Institute (AHMI) in Atlanta, Ga., Jan. 5-9, 2005. A vital part of the seven-year-old UTSA program, the conference includes a series of workshops, seminars and networking opportunities for students and interaction with decision-making professionals in the nonprofit sector.

The UTSA American Humanics Student Association seeks financial support for operating costs and travel expenses to AHMI. The per-person conference cost is $475. Donations will help cover students' expenses for their final certification requirement in the program.

A special feature of this year's conference is Placement Day for juniors seeking internships opportunities and graduating seniors pursuing jobs after graduation. On-site interviews will be conducted at the conference.

UTSA is one of three Texas universities offering the American humanics program and the only UT component to offer leadership and management training including job experience for entry-level management positions in the nonprofit sector. Similar programs are offered at more than 70 universities across the country.

Many of the 156 graduates of the UTSA program have remained in the San Antonio area, working in organizations such as Communities in Schools, Junior Achievement and Family Violence Prevention Services.

The program trains students in managerial skills, accounting, marketing, board development, fund-raising principles and practices, program planning and evaluation, and risk management. Requirements for certification include nonprofit internships, community volunteer service, team-building workshops, mentoring seminars and participation in the American Humanics Management Institute.
