Davis replaces Jerry Barloco, who recently announced his retirement. Barloco's responsibilities included direction of the institute along with the Office of Human Resources and Development, which will report to the UTSA Office of Business Affairs beginning in January.
"I have great confidence in Davis' ability to lead the Institute of Texan Cultures during this time of transition," Barloco said. "John is dedicated to the institute and its mission of educating people about the influence of cultural history and science on the State of Texas."
Davis earned a doctorate in humanities from UT Austin, where he also earned his bachelor's and master's degrees. He was a member of the original team at ITC in 1967, when it also was known as the Texas Pavilion at HemisFair '68. He currently is responsible for ITC programming, special events, research, volunteer programs and collections.
Crane joined UTSA in 2003 after serving in the U.S. Air Force, where he last served as dean of students at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) in Monterey, Calif. Before joining DLIFLC, he was director of business process reengineering and special studies at the Air Force Directorate of Civilian Policy and Personnel Plans. He has a master's degree in social work from UT Austin with a concentration in nonprofit administration.
