UTSA communication students participate in media conference in Mexico
(Dec. 17, 2004)--A group of faculty and students from the UTSA Department of Communication visited the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico, in October to participate in an international conference and engage in intercultural dialogue with Mexican students.
The UTSA College of Liberal and Fine Arts funded the student travel and co-sponsored the conference, themed "Media and Globalization in North America."

The student participants -- Jacqueline Arevalo, Zyanya Arino, Candice Edwards, Keysha Hogan, Jason Ramirez, Rafael Saenz, Mariana Lamaison Sears and Diane Yzaguirre -- also visited Monterrey's impressive International Book Fair and sampled food, dance and music from a variety of Mexican states at the Tecnológico's ExpoTec festival.
The faculty participants included Assistant Professor Sara DeTurk, who organized and facilitated student dialogue sessions; Assistant Professor Viviana Rojas, who presented a paper, "Ambivalence and Distinction in the Consumption of Spanish-Language TV in the U.S.," and Associate Professor Kent Wilkinson, whose paper, "No se habla Spanglish: U.S.-Mexican Broadcasting in NAFTA's First Decade," was co-authored with 2001 UTSA honors graduate Samantha Joy Arnold.
