Coping with holiday stress: 5 tips to get you through

(Dec. 17, 2004)--Elizabeth Stanczak, executive director of UTSA Health and Counseling Services, offers some tips for dealing with stress during the holiday season...

  • Plan ahead -- Attempt to maintain balance in your life by planning your activities, events and excursions so that a relatively regular routine can be maintained (i.e., go to sleep at about the same time each night, eat at regular times during the day and exercise)
  • Be realistic -- Keep expectations of the holidays and others realistic. Don't plan the "perfect" party or present. Life doesn't happen that way. Instead, remember that it is okay to make mistakes, forget things or spill. It will lessen the stress on all involved if you are able to let go of the perfectionism.
  • Spend wisely -- Spending too much money on things will likely increase stress. Try to remember that the holidays are for sharing and caring about one another. No one wants you deep in debt over their gift. Create a manageable budget and try to stick to it during the holiday season.
  • Be aware -- ... of your body and your responses to stress, lack of sleep or general fatigue. Once you notice that you are stressed, do something to relax yourself like take a walk or a warm bath. Once you become aware of your own stress you will be in a better place to help loved ones who also might be responding to seasonal stress.
  • Be safe -- Keep an eye on your belongings and use general rules of safety. For example, don't drink and drive. Remember where you parked and have your keys ready when you get to your car. Don't display your cash while at the mall. Remember that not everyone is in the holiday spirit, and remain vigilant while you are out and about.

Have a happy and safe holiday season and a Happy New Year!
