"Watercourse" by Stacy Levy

'Watercourse' exhibit is on display through Dec. 31

(Dec. 7, 2004)--UTSA presents the exhibit, "Watercourse," by Pennsylvania environmental sculptor Stacy Levy through Dec. 31 at the Durango Building gallery at the UTSA Downtown Campus.

Free and open to the public, viewing hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. The exhibit is sponsored by UTSA, Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, San Antonio River Authority and the 04ARTS Foundation.

The exhibit is a one-of-a-kind installation using water from the San Antonio River. Inner city art students of the Visual Thinking Strategies program collected water samples with the artist to guide a study of the San Antonio River watershed. Visual Thinking Strategies is a discovery-based learning strategy that facilitates growth in communication and critical thinking skills. Applying the VTS methodology with the students, Levy bridges the disciplines of art and science with the goal to ignite the imaginations of students through art, observation and ecology.

Levy lives and works in Pennsylvania. She received training in sculpture, graduating from Yale University in 1984. Her education includes study of forestry, environmental science and landscape architecture. She completed permanent sculpture commissions in Philadelphia and Seattle and was awarded in 1998 a sculpture commission by the City of San Antonio for the Mission Trails Project.
