ITC non-traditional courses spark seniors' interest

(Jan. 3, 2005)--What do subjects such as World War I, spies and secrets, and operettas have in common? They are three of 55 classes offered this spring by the Academy of Learning in Retirement (ALIR) at the Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC).

"ALIR is a program designed to encourage lifelong learning," said Jessica Sauceda, program coordinator. "With more than 200 students per semester, I can definitely say it has been an incredibly successful program for more than 14 years."

Registration for retirees 50 years and older is 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Jan. 10-12 in the ITC multipurpose room with classes from Jan. 18 through April 7.

Participants can register for as many courses as desired for a one-time semester tuition fee of $90 and a $30 parking fee, plus incidental costs for textbooks, materials, field trips and social activities.
