According to the National Eating Disorders Association, 10 percent of college women and 10 percent of all men have been diagnosed with an eating disorder or display symptoms of an eating disorder. Symptoms of eating disorders include restricting food intake, excessive exercise and dissatisfaction with body weight, size or image based on perceptions of what is normal in today's society. These symptoms can lead to dangerous behaviors and life-threatening problems. Twenty percent of those with severe untreated eating disorders die.
Those caught up in the cycle of eating disorders can and should seek professional help. Information and referrals for eating disorder treatment can be found at the eating disorders screenings or at Counseling Services.
