UTSA Spotlight: UTSA parliamentary debaters place second in Houston

(March 16, 2005)--Two UTSA debaters advanced to the final round of debate Feb. 25-25 in the championship division of a tournament hosted by the University of Houston.

UTSA juniors Erin White and Mark Este partnered to place second, losing to the third-ranked team in the nation from Texas Tech University.

UTSA senior Valerie Funkhouser-Broderick partnered with freshman Michelle Gomez for the competition. Although they did not qualify for the elimination rounds, both debaters won speaker awards. Funkhouser-Broderick placed second and Gomez placed fourth.

Parliamentary debate style is new to UTSA debate program in the 2004-2005 season. Each tournament the teams have attended, records have improved. The University of Houston tournament is the first time a UTSA has qualified for the final round of the highly competitive championship division.

For their final competition of the season, the team will compete in the National Parliamentary Debate Association's Championship Tournament March 17-21 at Texas Tech in Lubbock.
