UTSA hosts panel on offender reentry program

(March 30, 2005)--The UTSA College of Public Policy's Department of Criminal Justice and KLRN-TV host a screening and panel discussion on offender reentry, "Housing, Employment, Health and Special Needs Issues," from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, March 31 in the Frio Street Building Sam Riklin Auditorium (1.406), Downtown Campus.

The event is free and open to the public. There will be refreshments and a reception following the panel.

The second locally sponsored component of the Reentry National Media Outreach Campaign, the goal is to expand public awareness and dialogue while working with key organizations to strengthen families and neighborhoods.

Panelists at the March 31 event are Jose Castillo, executive director of the Bexar County Housing and Human Services Department; Fernando Guerra, director of health for the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District; Bruce Munch, clinical operations director for the Jail Division, Bexar County Center for Health Care Services and Diane Rath, chair and commissioner representing the public for the Texas Workforce Commission.

The screening will include segments from the PBS documentaries "Road to Return" and "Reentry: Life on the Outside."

Prisoner reentry is the process of leaving prison or jail and returning to society. All prisoners experience reentry regardless of their method of release, whether they are released on parole or without additional supervision. If the reentry process is successful, there are benefits in terms of improved public safety and the long-term reintegration of the former prisoner.
