UTSA Spotlight: UTSA environmental scientist wins San Antonio Business Journal '40 Under 40' Award

(March 16, 2005)--Dibyendu Sarkar, associate professor in the UTSA Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, recently was named a winner of the San Antonio Business Journal "40 Under 40" Award. The winners were selected from 160 nominated for their significant contributions to the San Antonio community.

Sarkar directs the Environmental Geochemistry Laboratory and represents UTSA in an 11-member, community-wide task force working to eliminate childhood lead poisoning by 2010. He is collaborating with scientists at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio to reduce lead and arsenic in agricultural soils by using special plants and removing lead-based paint from pre-1972 housing.

Additionally, Sarkar was involved in a study of the water quality at San Antonio's Mitchell Lake, which was used as a sludge disposal lagoon from 1900 to 1930.

Recently, the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center and the San Antonio Water System cleaned the lake to create a safer and more attractive educational and recreational resource for South Side bird enthusiasts and their families.
