Downtown Alliance names UTSA projects 'Downtown's Best'

(April 20, 2005)--Downtown Alliance San Antonio recently named two UTSA projects in its fifth annual Downtown's Best awards.

The UTSA Downtown Campus Durango Building addition and campus parking structure were named Best Development/Construction Project - New Construction, and the Institute of Texan Cultures' "Dinosaurs at the ITC" was voted Best Marketing Campaign.

The awards recognize achievements contributing to the quality of life in downtown San Antonio, making it a better place to live, work, shop and be entertained.

"The awards jury had some great nominations from which to pick," said Ben Brewer, Downtown Alliance president. "All were unique and many were deserving, which shows the quality of projects being undertaken in the downtown area."

The Durango Building, designed by Ford, Powell and Carson, is part of the third phase of the UTSA Downtown Campus that completes the southern edge of the campus. The parking structure built on the eastern side of the block was half-buried to preserve views from the campus to the downtown core and from downtown to the campus. The materials of the Durango Building were carefully selected to be harmonious with existing buildings.

The ITC conducted an exceptional campaign to promote the arrival of the "largest tourist ever to invade downtown San Antonio," a T rex Named Sue. The dinosaur exhibit produced by the Field Museum of Chicago made its only Texas appearance in San Antonio in a four-month ITC show.

Among nearly 20 awards, categories and winners included the Best Arts and Culture Project, "Chalk It Up," a new event by Artpace that turned Houston Street sidewalks into canvasses for local artists; Best Development/Construction Project - Restoration, San Fernando Cathedral; Best New Business, Johnny Rockets Original Hamburgers and Best Restaurant, Acenar.

Downtown Alliance members and other area residents make the annual nominations, and a three-person jury selects the winners. For more information, call (210) 225-3862.
