Some UTSA pay phones removed because of low usage

(April 12, 2005)--SBC Communications, the company that provides UTSA pay phones, is removing some of the devices because of low usage.

Because of the ubiquity of mobile phones, pay phone usage has dropped significantly across the country, including the UTSA 1604 and Downtown campuses. SBC standards require pay phones to generate at least $2 per day in revenue to remain active.

Currently, there are 23 phones on the 1604 Campus and seven at the Downtown Campus. Over the next several weeks, SBC will remove 15 pay phones from the 1604 Campus and five from the Downtown Campus.

To accommodate hearing-impaired students, most remaining pay phone locations will have a telecommunication device for the deaf (TDD). The TDD is in a drawer that opens when a TDD access number is dialed.

Users also may check out a portable TTY, or text telephone, from the University Center information desk, Fiscal Services at the 1604 Campus, any UTSA computer lab or the library circulation desks at the 1604 and Downtown campuses. The portable TTY can be used at any analog phone on campus. In case of emergency, the University Center information desk has a phone available as well.

UTSA emergency phone service will not be affected by the phone removals. To find an emergency phone at the 1604 and Downtown campuses, look for stations with blue lights on the top.

Additionally, all elevators will be equipped with an intercom system linked directly to University Police, replacing the current telephone-based, elevator emergency system.
