UTSA Hillel hosts model Seder dinner April 18

(April 15, 2005)--Hillel, a UTSA student organization, hosts its annual model Seder dinner from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Monday, April 18 in Business Building Room 2.06.04 at the UTSA 1604 Campus.

The event, free and open to the UTSA community and friends of Hillel, will begin with a social gathering and hors d'oeuvres at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Sephardic dinner and a student panel discussion reflecting on family Sephardic Seders.

Rabbi Bitran of Agudas Achim Synagogue will conduct the seder, focusing on Sephardic foods, customs and symbols.

Sephardic Jews are descendants of the large Jewish community in Spain and Portugal in the Middle Ages. Expelled from those countries in 1492, many settled in The Netherlands. Sephardic Jews never lost their identity and are found living all over the world today.

A Jewish religious observance, Seder is a feast commemorating the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. Taking place the first two nights of the eight-day holiday, the Seder is the most important event in the Passover celebration. Usually gathering the whole family and friends together, it is based in long-held traditions and customs.
