UTSA Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security hosts cyber defense competition

(May 13, 2005)--The UTSA Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security (CIAS) hosted the first Southwest Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition April 15-17 on the UTSA 1604 Campus.

The competition included five eight-member teams that were scored on their ability to operate and maintain a business network while under hostile cyber attack.

Students participating in the competition were from UTSA, University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, University of North Texas and Del Mar College. Texas A&M University and Del Mar College of Corpus Christi took first- and second-place honors.

"The event was a tremendous success that helped the students and faculty advisers identify shortcomings in their own programs and devise strategies to adjust their curriculum as a result," said Greg White, CIAS interim director.

The closing ceremony featured a presentation by Steve McCraw, director of Texas Homeland Security, who spoke on the importance of universities training cyber-security professionals to help defend the nation's critical network assets.

The competition was sponsored by Cisco Systems, Northrop Grumman, Harcourt, Acronis and the Alamo Chapter and UTSA Student Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association.
