TALC Summer Institute helps education transfer students

(June 17, 2005)--The UTSA Academy for Teacher Excellence Teacher Academy Learning Communities (TALC) hosts its second annual summer institute July 11-22 at the UTSA 1604 Campus.

The institute is open to students interested in joining the TALC program, new and community college transfer students who want to get a quick introduction to the UTSA community and students preparing to take the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) exam. TALC Summer Institute sessions include a bridging institute, a math workshop and a reading workshop. Students can sign up for one, two or three sessions.

The Bridging Institute, which seeks to ease the transition for incoming UTSA College of Education and Human Development (COHED) students, will feature speakers from various UTSA offices including the Tomas Rivera Center for Student Success, career services, admissions and scholarships.

Both THEA sessions are designed to help COHED and education transfer students comply with teacher certification requirements. UTSA professors will teach the math and writing workshops.

TALC was established to provide students with an opportunity to work with other students with similar academic interests and have made a decision to tackle barriers that may prevent them from completing their degree. The programs established and implemented through TALC help students maintain a strong academic performance as they confront the challenges of university life and persist through degree completion.

To participate, download a TALC Summer Institute brochure and application (pdf document). The deadline for application has been extended to Monday, June 27.
