Why I Support SECC

By Manuel Berriozabal

(Sept. 19, 2005)--With help from UTSA faculty and employees, the State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) supports many community programs which provide assistance to very needy individuals and families.

Contributions to charities through SECC and United Way help UTSA families and support local programs for the elderly and the disabled, as well as mental and physical health programs for our children and youth.

To me, SECC is about strengthening family units and reducing family violence. SECC also supports programs that offer affordable child care.

United Way programs are rigorously reviewed for their purpose, content and administration by United Way staff and volunteers. I speak from experience as a volunteer worker with United Way. Each program is required to submit an annual report which documents each program's achievements and the expenditure of program funds. Moreover, each program is expected to document its success in obtaining additional funds from other agencies and foundations.

Another important reason I give to SECC is that United Way staff and volunteers are always available to assist a supported charity to ensure that its services are effective and efficient.

Finally, the cost effectiveness of United Way is reflected in the fact that more than 91 percent of UTSA faculty and employee contributions go to the direct support of charity and agency programs.

This is why I continue to give to SECC supported charities. I believe that my annual contribution does an excellent job in reaching out to serve the many social needs of our community.

The charitable campaign ends Sept. 30, but there is still time to fill out your donation form and return it to your Area Champion. You also can donate online to SECC through the UTSA Hurricane Relief Effort site.
