Employee Sonia Saenz honored for job excellence
(Dec. 23, 2005)--Sonia Saenz, housekeeping supervisor at the UTSA Downtown Campus, recently was honored by Vice President for Business Affairs Kerry Kennedy as the first recipient of the Celebrating Excellence Quarterly Award.
Saenz distinguished herself by transforming the Downtown Campus housekeeping department. Since her assignment there in March, she has implemented changes in processes and programs that were beneficial to both staff and customers.

"Sonia Saenz had demonstrated that she and her staff are committed to serving UTSA faculty, staff and students, and that nothing short of excellence is expected or accepted," said Kennedy.
According to Kennedy, Saenz exhibited great initiative and creativity and promoted positive change by developing a plan to divide housekeeping areas in color-coded zones.
One set of zones helped staff members to better track assignments and areas to be covered, while another set clearly defined areas to be covered if a crewmember is absent.
Saenz demonstrated initiative and collaborative communications skills by soliciting ideas from staff members within and outside of her department and made improvements accordingly.
She virtually eliminated customer complaints by personally communicating with customers and following up to assure problem resolution. The level of service in the Downtown Campus housekeeping department has increased significantly. According to Saenz' supervisor, complaints have turned into compliments.
At a Downtown Campus ceremony, Saenz was presented an award certificate and will select one of the following prize packages: four season passes to Sea World plus parking, two season passes to UTSA men's and women's basketball, four season passes to Fiesta Texas plus parking, two nights at a Fredericksburg bed and breakfast, or a product from the Awards Network catalog.
