UTSA's Rick Nixon accepts position with NCAA

(Jan. 4, 2006)--Rick Nixon, assistant athletic director for media relations at The University of Texas at San Antonio since 1987, has been named NCAA associate director of the Division I Women's Basketball Championship.

Nixon, who will serve as the primary media contact for the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship, replaces Scottie Rodgers, who is now with College Sports Television.

Nixon served as local media coordinator when UTSA hosted NCAA Division I championship events including the 1998 and 2004 Men's Final Four, 2002 Women's Final Four and men's basketball regional championships in 1997, 2001 and 2003 at San Antonio's Alamodome.

"Rick has been a part of our NCAA tournament family for many years. He will bring a great deal of tournament experience and an in-depth knowledge of the tournament operations," said Sue Donohoe, vice-president for Division I Women's Basketball. "Rick will be very involved in the operational aspects of our championships and also will be engaged in several of our women's basketball broad-based initiatives, including the women's basketball branding campaign."

Before taking the position at UTSA in 1987, Nixon worked as a copywriter for Accent Advertising Agency in San Antonio from 1982 to 1987. He earned a bachelor's degree in journalism, broadcasting and film in 1982 from Trinity University in San Antonio.

"I am honored with this tremendous opportunity that the NCAA has afforded me," Nixon said. "Being able to join the NCAA is a dream come true for me. I have been fortunate to work many NCAA championship events in San Antonio over the last few years and feel that this experience will serve me well in my new position. I appreciate the many people I have met and the experiences I have had at UTSA, and will always look back warmly at my time spent as part of the Roadrunner family."

Nixon will be responsible for the administration of specified areas of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship, assisting with the training and supervision of administrative employees, supporting the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee; and serving as the primary contact for media operations of the Division I Women's Basketball Championship.

At UTSA, Nixon has directed publicity efforts for the 16 sports at the university, while also serving as play-by-play announcer for UTSA men's and women's basketball radio and television broadcasts. He is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America organization.

A native San Antonian, Nixon also has served the United States Olympic Committee as a press officer at the Summer World University Games in Daegu, South Korea, in 2003, and in Izmir, Turkey, in 2005.
