UTSA presents Black History Month events

(Feb. 6, 2006)--As part of the observance of Black History Month, a number of special events will be hosted in Februay at the UTSA 1604 and Downtown campuses. Most of the events are free and open to the public.

Events include a month-long exhibit, "HARAMBEE: The Prevalence of Ritual," which features paintings by African American San Antonio artists; a Feb. 6 discussion on misperceptions of African American culture; a Feb. 8 showing of the Spike Lee film, "Do the Right Thing"; a soul food extravaganza and "Jazz in the Plaza" on Feb. 9, among other activities.

Feb. 6

• 6:30 p.m. -- Discussion: "Misperceptions of African American Culture," sponsored by UMOJA, University Center Retama Auditorium (2.02.02), 1604 Campus

Feb. 8

• 5:30 p.m. -- Dinner, Movie and Discussion. Film: "Do the Right Thing," University Center Laurel Room (2.01.28), 1604 Campus

Feb. 9

• Noon -- Soul Food Extravaganza, sponsored by UMOJA and Student Activities, University Center first floor window lounge, 1604 Campus.
• 5 p.m. -- Jazz in the Plaza (also a Homecoming event), Bill Miller Plaza, Downtown Campus

Feb. 11

• 9 a.m. -- Youth Speak Out. Speaker: "Jihad," sponsored by African American Studies Program, Durango Building Southwest Room (1.124), Downtown Campus

Feb. 13

• 7 p.m. -- Discussion: "The Use of the N-word," sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha, University Center Retama Auditorium (2.02.02), 1604 Campus

Feb. 14

• 3 p.m. -- Movie Matinee: "O," Durango Building Student Activities Center, Downtown Campus

Feb. 16

• 4:30 p.m. -- Art Exhibit Student Reception, Durango Building Southwest Room (1.124), Downtown Campus
• 7 p.m. -- Poetry Slam Coffeehouse, sponsored by UMOJA and CAB, University Center ski lodge, 1604 Campus

Feb. 18

• 6 p.m. -- Second Annual Black Heritage Ball, University Center Laurel Room (1.01.28), 1604 Campus. Tickets: UTSA students, $10, faculty, staff and community, $15; tables for $100; RSVP and pick up tickets by Feb.14 ; attire is semi formal to formal; ball includes dinner, fashion show and dance until 11 p.m.; information: (210) 458-4155.
