(Feb. 21, 2006)--A snow storm and freezing temperatures did not deter UTSA debaters during their recent trip to South Bend, Ind. UTSA juniors Mark Este and Philip DiPiazza placed third among 45 parliamentary debate teams competing in the Irish Invitational Debate Tournament hosted by the University of Notre Dame.

Este and DiPiazza were undefeated in six preliminary rounds, defeating teams from the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh, Wheaton, Century and Loyola-Chicago.

In the elimination rounds, they overcame teams from Cumberland and Ferris State, finally losing to a team from Century College. Este won 13th speaker among 90 debaters.

Freshmen Jacob Alford and Andy Pennington placed 11th and 12th among 40 debaters in the open, advanced level of policy debate. With a 3-3 record, they narrowly missed progressing to elimination rounds. Alford and Pennington defeated teams from Case Western, Kings College and Miami - Ohio.

The UTSA debaters' next outing takes them to the University of West Virginia for the Junior National Championship Tournament in Morgantown, March 2-6.
