(Feb. 2, 2006)--As part of Black History Month at UTSA, the African American Studies Program, Office of Institutional Diversity and University Center will host a gospel concert, "Gospel Explosion," at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 3 in the University Center Retama Auditorium (2.02.02), 1604 Campus.

The event is free and open to the public. A reception is at 6 p.m. in the University Center galleria.

The concert will feature San Antonio gospel groups Grace First Baptist Church Choir, St. Paul United Methodist Church Men's Choir, soloist Juliette Brown, and James Bennett and the Texas Jubilaires.

In celebration and expression of the black church, gospel music began during the Harlem Renaissance, which developed between the world wars in New York. Inspired by the Bible, gospel music has to be heard and seen for the full impact.
