(Feb. 8, 2006)--UTSA President Ricardo Romo was installed as the chairman of the board of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at a Jan. 19 ceremony.

Romo will serve as chairman for 2006 where he will lead the 17 staff members and 750 member organizations to provide access to technology, capital and people.

At the event, Romo spoke in front of a scale model of the popular West Side store run for many years by his parents, Henry and Alicia Romo. Romo said he will dedicate his work this year to his father, a man who taught him the value of work and that education is a key to success.

The Hispanic Chamber is the principle resource and advocate for the growth of local Hispanic businesses and the driving force in guiding San Antonio's emergence as a national leader of successful Hispanics in business.

"I am very proud of the history and image of this organization, as well as the promotion of the importance of higher education in our growing local economy," said Romo. "As the chairman of the Hispanic Chamber, I will work with each member organization to foster access to opportunity for all in our community."

"This 2006 assembly of the board of directors was selected by a nominating committee of Hispanic Chamber members," said A.J. Rodriguez, Hispanic Chamber president and CEO. "They were very thoughtful about recommending enthusiastic individuals to take our Hispanic Chamber to the next level."

The Hispanic Chamber mission is to provide access to resources for member businesses. UTSA has a similar mission with the goals to provide access to education and to prepare students to succeed in the knowledge-based economy of the 21st century.
