Employees have options for Battle of Flowers

(April 5, 2006)--During San Antonio's Battle of Flowers celebration on Friday, April 28, UTSA employees have two options for taking off that afternoon.

Although this day is not an official holiday, which can only be designated by the Texas Legislature, UTSA offices are encouraged to adjust work schedules to allow employees to attend the Battle of the Flowers celebration. However, all university offices will remain open.

Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that UTSA maintains adequate staffing to conduct business during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

In order to accommodate employees who want to attend the festivities, two options are available:

  • Employees may work a four-and-a-half-day week from April 24 through April 28 (7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon, Friday, or
  • Employees may use available leave time (annual leave, floating holiday or compensatory) for the afternoon of April 28, 2006.

In order to coordinate adequate office coverage and work schedules in a timely manner, employees should submit requests to their supervisors by Friday, April 21, 2006. Requests for a flexible work schedule will require approval from the appropriate vice president in accordance with Handbook of Operating Procedures (HOP) policy 4.29 - Hours of Work for Staff Employees, section B.

Requests for time off using available leave time requires advance approval from the employee's immediate supervisor in accordance with HOP policy 4.20 - Authorized Leave, section C, item 4.
