La Prensa receives regional minority media award

(Sept. 12, 2006)--After nomination by the UTSA Minority Business Enterprise Center (MBEC), the U.S. Department of Commerce's Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) selected San Antonio's La Prensa newspaper as this year's 18-state regional award winner in its minority media - cornerstone category. MBEC provides a range of business consultation services to assist minority business clients in all facets of business development.

Tino Duran, owner and publisher of San Antonio's only family-owned bilingual newspaper, received the award in Dallas, at an Aug. 25 awards luncheon during the 24th regional Minority Enterprise Development Week conference.

"We are humbled by this award, because it is symbolic of the families and small businesses we serve in our city," said Duran. "We work and serve with such a passion because we know San Antonio well, since we were born and raised in the Alamo City."

"We strive to keep the newspaper alive to serve as a communication tool for small and minority businesses. We relate to the plight of new entrepreneurs, because we also struggled when we started a newspaper in Fort Worth and when we reactivated La Prensa in San Antonio," Duran explained. "The award is a tribute to La Prensa's many years of service to others in the community it proudly serves."

Each year, MDBA recognizes contributions made by minority entrepreneurs, corporations and advocates who work for the betterment of minority business and the nation's economy. MBEC nominated La Prensa for the MBDA regional award because of Duran's advocacy and support for minority businesses throughout his career.

The original La Prensa was established in San Antonio in 1913, but six decades later, the newspaper ceased publication soon after its founder's death. Tino and Amelia Duran revived the La Prensa name, and the biweekly newspaper has been published since July 1989. This year, La Prensa celebrates its 17th year in the community.
